This article is a introduction to the major HMA pavement mat problems. Mat problem articles are organized the mat's visual appearance. Each visual mat problem category contains (1) a description of the problem with pictures if available, (2) a discussion of the problem's nature, (3) possible causes and (4) possible solutions to eliminate the problem. An in-depth treatment of mat problems and defects can be found in:
